Oral Piercing Aftercare Guide

All piercing services are done using high quality, implant grade jewelry.

If you are having a piercing placed on any area of your lip, please refer to the Body Piercing Aftercare Guide for instructions on how to clean the external portion of your piercing.

What to expect:

  • Mild to moderate swelling
  • You will be pierced with a longer piece of jewelry to accommodate swelling. We recommend returning after 3–5 weeks to have a piercer downsize the post. A second downsize may be desired after a couple of months, once the piercing is fully healed.
  • Slight bruising, bleeding, and discharge
  • Slight redness and mild discomfort

During the first 6-9 months:

  • Leave your jewelry in at all times. Do not remove it without assistance from a professional piercer to avoid irritation.

  • Avoid touching your jewelry unnecessarily.

  • Brush your teeth regularly. It’s a good idea to replace your toothbrush after getting pierced. Use regular toothpaste rather than whitening formulas.

  • Drink plenty of ice water. Staying hydrated helps reduce swelling and rinses your mouth regularly.

  • After anything you eat, drink, smoke, or vape, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth out with clean water.

What to Avoid:

  • Oral contact with foreign objects or other people. Do not chew on pens, fingernails, etc.

  • Commercial mouthwash (including alcohol-free types), hydrogen peroxide, or whitening toothpastes, as these can irritate the piercing due to harsh chemicals.

  • It is best to avoid caffeine and alcohol for the first 4–6 weeks, as they can cause dehydration and excessive swelling. If consumed, drink water immediately afterward to stay hydrated.

  • Trauma to the area, such as excessive movement during eating or talking. Take small bites of food, chew carefully, and try to avoid yelling.

  • Changing the jewelry to low-quality or costume pieces, especially those with external threading, can damage and irritate the piercing. If you’re interested in implant-grade jewelry in different styles, ask our staff for recommendations.

  • Do not share jewelry with others to prevent disease transmission.
